Lot 263

1851/81 N-3 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty medium steel brown. The luster is a bit subdued by a thin layer of natural oxidation but the details are quite sharp and the eye appeal is excellent. The only marks are some tiny specks of darker toning (not carbon) in the field before the portrait, and it takes a glass to see them. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The 51 over 81 feature is bold (actually 51 over an inverted 18 when the die sinker accidentally started punching in the date upside down). A nice example of this very popular "Redbook" variety. Our grade is MS60 (perhaps better following a proper bath to uncover more of the underlying mint luster). The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 4 finer: 3 in 65, 1 in 65+. Estimated Value $1,200 - UP
Ex David Bloom 10/8/2011-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection.
