Lot 26

1794 S-40 R5+ PCGS graded AU50, CAC Approved. Choice glossy light to medium brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints of the portrait. The surfaces are perfectly smooth and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only marks are a small dig or planchet flake nestled between the two lumps in the field below the cap and a pair of very light rim bruises under the date. The reverse is absolutely flawless. LDS, Breen state V, with a relatively strong die crack through the top of the cap, a strong radial crack from the rim through the D in UNITED to the leaf below where it fades away, and another strong radial crack from the rim through the left edge of the N in UNITED to the leaf below. Graded VF35 and tied for CC#5 with the ANS coin in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 net VF35 and CC#5 by itself with the ANS example one of the 4 finer pieces, his photo #27811. Our grade is VF35. The reverse of this cent is plated in the 1991 Noyes reference to illustrate the late die state. A superior example of this rare die variety and a neat die state. The attribution and Boka provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer: 1 in 63, 1 in 64. PCGS #35585. Estimated Value $25,000 - UP
