Lot 257

1850 N-27 R5- PCGS graded EF40. Glossy medium brown on the devices with medium chocolate brown toning in the fields and protected areas. No roughness or verdigris; a dull nick on the neck is the only notable mark. A nice cent, just moderately worn. What makes it special is that this is the coin that was used by Walter Breen in 5/1961 to identify the new Not-in-Newcomb die variety N-27. MDS. The fine die lines on the reverse are gone but the point up from the right top of the T in CENT is sharp. Our grade is VF20. A relatively modest cent that comes with a nice story and provenance. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 4 finer: 1 in 45, 1 in 50, 1 in 58, 1 in 63. Estimated Value $200 - UP
