Arthur, Chester A. - Military Appointment Signed as President (1829-1886) 21st President of the United States (1881-85); as James A. Garfield's Vice President, he became President upon Garfield's assassination. Partly-printed document signed "Chester A. Arthur" as President, one page, vellum, 17 x 14¾", Washington, Feb. 24, 1885. Countersigned by Robert Todd Lincoln as Secretary of War. Appointing Edgar U. Howe as First Lieutenant in the Seventeenth Regiment of Infantry. Vellum is toned and creased; navy War Dept. seal has a few teeth missing, but the engravings are impressive and Arthur's large signature is clear and unaffected by creasing. Estimate $500 - 600
