Lot 244

1850 N-17 R4+ NGC graded MS65 Brown. Very lustrous bluish steel and olive with at least 5% of the mint red remaining visible. Nicely struck and choice except for three spots of darker toning with traces of verdigris within two of those spots. One spot of fine verdigris is at the dentils under the 85 and the other is at the top of star 2. Another spot at star 12 contains a bit of crud (not carbon) and that may be removable. Otherwise this cent is choice. E-MDS, die state b early, with faint traces of a die crack on the rim outlining a large rim cud that is forming from star 6 to star 8 (clearest over star 8). Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#5 in the Grellman census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label. NGC population 2; 1 finer in 66.
