2 ½ Imperials - 25 Roubles 1896*. GOLD. On the Coronation of Nicholas II. Bit 312 (R2), Ilyin (150 Rubl.), Petrov (200 Rubl.), Sev 555 (RRR), Fr.171. Extremely rare; a Classic Russian rarity with only 301 pieces struck. In a contemporary swivel gold mount set on a malachite dome (formed from the polished half of the nodule). By Vladimir Finikov, workmaster at the Bolin workshop, St. Petersburg. Maker’s mark: ‘B.?’ and Zolotniki ‘56’ mark on swivel gold base. A unique presentation piece set. Some friction hairlines in the fields, pressmarks on the left and right edges likely from years position in the swivel stand. Otherwise, Brilliant uncirculated. Estimate $90,000UP
The entire piece was presented to either Jean Pierre Cubat (1844-1922), French-born chef to three Tsars – Alexander II, Alexander III and Nicholas II, sometime between late 1896 and 1903. In addition to his culinary court position, in 1886, Jean Pierre opened a French restaurant, Café de Paris in St. Petersburg. His brother André at some point took over running the establishment.
