Lot 2207

German States - Hesse-Cassel. Ship Taler, 1655-AG. Dav-6783; Schütz-1086; KM-232.4; Hoffm.1280. Mintmaster AG (Arnold Gall, 1637-1657). Wilhilm VI, 1637-1663. Crowned Hessian Arms, date around and AG at lower left. Reverse Legend: "VELA VENTIS HIS LEVANTUR" "Under such circumstances things are going well". Sailing ship left. Well struck example with lovely old toning. Very Rare. NGC graded EF-45.

The ship Talers appeared in 1652 and were minted in small numbers until 1655. The symbolism of the "ship of state" sailing along on untroubled seas was not lost on the people of the time. Peace had arrived, and the quality of life was slowly improving.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.
David Cassel Collection.

Realized $9,200
