Lot 1990

1870. Pattern Quarter dollar. J-879, P-976, R-7. Copper, plain edge. . J-879. NGC graded Proof 63 Red. This is one of the beautiful "Standard" silver issues, struck in copper, and features a seated Liberty on the obverse holding a shield in one hand and an olive branch in the other, note the pole with cap of freedom behind. On the reverse, a complex and bold wreath of farm products with 25 CENTS at the center. Minor hairlines account for the grade, with a couple of spots on the obverse, but they are small. Perhaps 10 are known, this being the only red one graded that we know of.
