Lot 196

1827 N-8 R3 PCGS graded MS66BN. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. Highly lustrous and exceptionally attractive bluish steel and light olive brown. Sharply struck and virtually perfect. The only marks are a small, faint spot of slightly darker toning in the field between stars 5 & 6, another resting on the upper edge of the ribbon loop, and a tiny planchet flake or struck-through depression between the N & I in UNITED, as struck. MDS with the obverse die cracks clear and microscopic die flowlines extending into the fields from the dentils on both sides. Called MS60+ and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU50 and tied for CC#5 (which illustrates why grading from photos rather than actual coins is not always a good idea), his photo #20839. Our grade is MS64+, close to MS65. PCGS Population 1; none finer.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.
Ex Henry C. Hines-Dr. William H. Sheldon-Numismatic Gallery-Floyd T. Starr, Stack's 6/13/84:199.
