Lot 1903

1877. PCGS graded AU-55. Lovely golden toning with reflective fields. Only 797 struck with merely 50 examples estimated to have survived. A classic rarity from the 1870s decade. Low mintage for any business strike, all of which remaining 1877 Liberty tens which have any luster remaining seem to display Prooflike fields from die polish. Possibly so few were made that the dies failed to wear away the polish by the time they were retired at the end of the year. This particular coin is exceptionally choice for the grade, the cheek on Liberty does have moderate tick marks, but nothing deep or worthy of note elsewhere. The diagnostic die polish is noted on IN and ST of the reverse motto. Breen notes that possibly 10-12 survive, but we suggest that number is perhaps closer to 15 to 20, which seems more in line with the census figures published by the grading services. Well struck, with attractive toning. Pop 5; 7 finer, 5 in 58, 1 in 60, 1 in 61 (PCGS # 8677) .
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000.

Realized $12,338
