Chase, Salmon P (1808-1873) American politician and jurist. Autograph Letter Signed "S.P. Chase" one month after President Lincoln accepted his resignation as Secretary of the Treasury, 1p, 8"x5", Beverly, Mass., 1864 July 25. Very fine. To his successor, William P. Fessenden. In part: "Col. Browne, Secretary of Gov. Andrews desires me to say to you that he was constituted Agent to arrange all money matters of Dr. Gwynn with the department….I was glad to have a gentleman of… intelligence & unimpeachable integrity…to attend to these matters….the important undertaking…would be …one of immense advantage to the country." Three months later, Lincoln appointed Chase Supreme Court Chief Justice to replace Roger Taney.
