Hamilton, Alexander - Letter Signed as Secretary of the Treasury. 1755 or 1757-(1804) One of the Founding Fathers of the United States. A key advisor to George Washington, he served as the first Secretary of Treasury and is considered to be the founder of our nation's economic system. He died in a duel with Aaron Burr. Printed circular letter signed "A. Hamilton" as Secretary of the Treasurer, one page, 6¼ x 7½", Washington, Aug. 27, 1792. The circular letter gives instructions regarding "the Return of exports, which is transmitted quarterly to this Office by the Collectors." His instructions include a request for "a monthly abstract of all Licenses which shall be granted to coasting and fishing vessels" and instructions "concerning the Duties on Spirits distilled with the United States…" Light toning,darker at left edge, and small edge splits, not affecting the large, bold signature.
