Lot 1896
1869. NGC graded AU-53. Only 1,830 minted. Untoned with some luster evident. Still reflective in the areas around the stars and letters; light reddish-gold with pockets of mint sparkle remaining. A truly scarce example of this valued rarity. The few business strikes that were produced of the date mostly entered circulation, creating a low-mintage figure by anyone’s reckoning. Walter Breen called this date "Unknown Uncirculated," while Akers noted that he had "Not seen a strictly Uncirculated 1869." There is, however, now one top-end specimen grading PCGS MS64 (the Bass specimen). While occasional About Uncirculated specimens available, it takes patience and perhaps a bit of luck to find one, since they are typically offered "few and far between" as our old adage goes. This rarity will elicit a definite interest as it makes its entry into sale Pop 6; 16 finer (PCGS # 8655) . Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.
