Lot 1895
1868. PCGS graded AU-58. Nice light gold tone. A rare date. Only 10,630 minted. Near Mint State detail with light pinkish-gold color and some radial luster. A touch of reflectivity to the fields and some original mint frost in the protected areas of the devices. All of the With Motto eagles from 1866 through 1873 (Closed 3) had low mintages and Condition Census survivors generally are in the choice AU range. The 1868, with a recorded mintage of 10,730, has the largest mintage of any Philadelphia eagle produced from 1866-1873. With that said, do not be deceived into thinking that this issue is easy to locate in the choice AU range. In fact, only a single Uncirculated example has been graded by PCGS (MS62) and very few AU58 examples. One thing is for sure, the present 1868 is a Condition Census example of a tough year, and time frame, for eagles. Identified by a scuff in the field near stars 1 and 2, another over the top of Liberty’s head, as well as a chattermark below TR of TRUST on the reverse. Pop 11; 1 finer in 62 (PCGS # 8653) . Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.
