Lot 183

1826/5 N-8 R2 PCGS graded MS66BN. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. Overdate 6 over 5. Beautiful and highly lustrous light bluish steel brown with slightly mellowed mint red covering the protected areas on both sides, especially on the obverse. Virtually flawless in every respect, a small spot of very fine carbon at the dentils off the stem tip being the only mark visible without a very strong glass. M-LDS with fine die flowlines covering the fields on both sides. Many of the stars and letters in the reverse legend are drawn toward the rims. The undertype inside the top of the 6 is dull but remains visible, remnants of the undertype 5 (although there is some discussion whether or not this is a true overdate). Called MS65 choice and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20882. Bland says MS63 and finest known as well. Our grade is MS64. PCGS Population 1; none finer.
Estimated Value $15,000-UP.
Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau 5/16/45:579-Floyd T. Starr, Stack's 6/13/84:189.
