Lot 182

1848 N-33 R5+ NGC graded MS65 Brown. Very attractive lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with peeps of faded mint red on both sides, particularly on the reverse. The only notable marks are a dull nick on star 13, a spot of dark toning on the rim below the second 8, and a few tiny ticks very well hidden in the wreath below the R in AMERICA. Sharply struck MDS. Our grade is MS60, but this cent has choice mint state eye appeal (hence the superior grade assigned by NGC). Graded MS63 by Del Bland. Tied for CC#4 honors for this tough die variety in the Grellman census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label. NGC population 1; finest BN at NGC, tied with two BN pieces at PCGS. Estimated Value $1,500 - UP
Ex "FC" 3/1976-Myles Z. Gerson 1/3/1980-R. S. Brown, Jr., Superior 9/30/1986:1178 ($1265)-Jules Reiver, Heritage Auctions 1/24/2006:20356-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection (includes the Brown and Reiver collection envelopes and both lot tickets).
