Lot 1751

$10 Gold Indian. 1907. Wire rim, periods. PCGS graded MS-64. Light yellow golden surfaces that are robust with satiny luster. Centrally well struck with the borders weakly struck, most noticeably the stars above feathers. Several light tick marks on the eagles' left leg. Raised swirly die scratches on the reverse (mint made). It is estimated that 500 pieces were minted and this is a nice example as choice MS64 specimen's truly are tough and the lack of rims makes pristine surfaces rare.
David Akers' commented, "Technically, the 1907 Wire Edge is a pattern (Judd 1774) and not a regular issue but it has always been considered an integral part of the series."The 1907 Wire Edge is scarcer than the other variety of 1907, the Rolled Edge. The Rolled Edge issues, although given a Judd #, were actually produced in large quantities intended for circulation and should not be considered a pattern on the same scale that the Wire Edge examples are. The 1907 Wire Rim represents the same concept as the High Relief double eagles of Augustus St. Gaudens. Both the High Relief double eagles and these Wire Rim eagles were the product of Augustus St. Gaudens' genius capabilities as a coin designer and represent his true intention of creating America's most beautiful gold coin (PCGS # 8850) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.

Realized $35,650
