Lot 174

Texas Confederate Side Knife. Remarkable provenance distinguishes this Confederate side knife. Once belonging to bugler William Merritt of the 1st Texas Mounted Rifles, this knife along with other Civil War related items were discovered in a barn long held by the Merritt family. Cross checking his name with the "Roster of Confederate Soldiers (1861-1865) Volume XI" by Janet Hewett (copy of roster and history included) and "Texas" by Stewart Sifakis (copies of pages also included) both confirm Mr. Merritt's presence in the 1st Texas Cavalry, Company B as a bugler. Overall length is 15¼" inches, with blade retaining its sharpness (caution!) Light rusting, minor pitting and original handle. Overall in fine condition. Also included is an ambrotype of a young girl nicely presented in its thermoplastic case, also part of the collection. Case has one side of one panel cracked but otherwise remarkably intact with the green velvet interior very nicely preserved.
Estimated Value $500 - 800.

Realized $1,020
