Lot 172

1848 N-23 R3+ PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Frosty steel brown with faint overtones of light bluish steel. The portrait is well struck but most of the stars have missing or incomplete radial lines (as usual for this variety). This cent has mint state eye appeal but there is a hint of rub on the highpoints. The only notable marks are a couple dull, light scratches on the cheek (not noticeable enough to deter the graders at PCGS). MDS, die state a late. There is die rust evident at stars 2-6 (as always on this variety) but the early die polishing lines in the fields are gone. The fine die line from the first S in STATES to the E in CENT is still visible. Our grade is AU55 sharpness net AU50 for the faint scratches. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 4 finer: 1 in 63, 2 in 64, 1 in 65. Estimated Value $250 - UP
Ex Bowers & Merena 11/14/1998:1190-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection.
