Lot 1705

Parthian Kingdom. Mithradates II, c. 123-88 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.9 g), Seleucia mint. Bearded bust left of Mithradates II. Reverse: Archer seated right on omphalos; palm branch in right field. Sellwood 24/4. Natural flan crack from minting procedure; well centered on a gargantuan flan. NGC graded Choice AU: Strike 5/5; Surface: 5/5. Our grade is lustrous and Virtually Mint State.

This particular type is one of, if not the, most impressive of all the Parthian issues. It was extremely rare until a group was dispersed about ten years ago. The hoard has found new collector homes, and now seldom are these beautiful tetradrachms offered.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.

Realized $2,760
