Karian Satraps. Hidrieos, c. 351-344 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.27 g). Head of Apollo three-quarter facing to right, wearing laurel wreath, drapery and brooch at neck. Reverse: Zeus Labraundos standing right, holding labrys and reversed spear; small "E" between foot and spear. Traité II 100; SNG Cop Supp. 340; BMC p. 183, 1; SNG Kayhan 880; SNG von Aulock 8046. Reverse a little over-cleaned. Accompanied by an NGC photo certificate: AU; Strike 5/5; Surface 3/5. Fine Style. Rev. cleaned. Our grade is Superb Extremely Fine.

Built about 350 B.C., within a few years of when this coin was minted, the great tomb of Mausolos was erected by his sister-wife, Artemisia. This mausoleum was later to become one of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
