Lot 1687

Karia, Kaunos, 420-400 BC. AR Stater (11.70 g). Female deity (Isis?) with curved wings running left, carrying caduceus and wreath. Reverse: Halved triangular shape (baetyl or meteoric stone?) within incuse. Boston MFA 2109; cf. Troxell (Essays Thompson) pl. 31, 29 [mint "A," period III]. Struck from worn dies (common for this issue). Choice Very Fine.

The artistic style on this stater has the deity running left, while her torso is shown in a full frontal view, and her head turns back to display her profile -- this would be a difficult pose for a mortal. The reverse displays the honor the city placed upon its resident meteorite.
Estimated Value $800 - 900.

Realized $920
