Lot 1686

Ionia, Samos, c. 400-365 BC. AR Tetradrachm (14.79 g). Lion's scalp facing. Reverse: Forepart right of ox wearing ornamental collar; in left field, olive branch. Barron --. Very rare. Extremely Fine.

This provocative and perhaps unpublished tetradrachm on the Rhodian standard is not listed in the die study of the coins of Samos by J.P. Barron. The magistrate is not listed for this denomination or time period. The only mention in the corpus of an Alexander as magistrate is a later trihemiobol issued on the Samian standard, circa 300 BC.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.
