Lot 166

1848 N-18 R4+ PCGS graded AU53. Glossy medium steel brown and chocolate with frosty golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas, especially on the reverse. Would rate a higher grade but there are too many small nicks on the obverse for a cent with this level of sharpness. The reverse is nearly and free of marks and has Choice About Uncirculated eye appeal. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state b, with crumbling that connects the tops of the C & E in CENT. All the earlier die lines are clear. Our grade is EF40+, tied for CC#9 in the Grellman census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS holder. PCGS population 2; 5 finer: 1 in 55, 1 in 58, 2 in 62, 1 in 66. Estimated Value $450 - UP
Ex Chris McCawley, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/24/2003:381-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection (lot ticket included).
