1855-C. PCGS graded AU-53. Rich golden toning. this is the toughest Charlotte Mint Gold dollar behind the unobtainable 1849-C with the Open Wreath. Furthermore the 1855-C was the first appearance from the Charlotte Mint of the Type II style for this series, which increased the diameter of the planchet from 12.7 mm to 14.3 mm, but in the same process, the planchet bacame thinner. Thus all the mints had diffculty in striking the Type II design. This date and mint is also known for being the lowest grade on average of all this series, so high grade pieces like this splendid AU-53 are in strong demand when they appear. Only 9,803 struck. Pop 16; 23 finer, 12 in 55, 7 in 58, 1 in 60, 3 in 61. (PCGS # 7533) .
