Lot 159

1825 N-3 R3 PCGS graded MS66BN. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. Highly lustrous bluish steel brown and light chocolate with generous traces of mint color covering the protected areas on both sides. Nearly flawless surfaces with unbroken satiny mint frost. The only marks are a couple microscopic specks of reddish brown toning on the obverse and a splash of darker olive toning at TA in STATES. The portrait displays a needle-sharp strike with every hair fully defined. Late die state with a faint die crack from the bust tip into the field right of star 1 and another that joins the top of the 5 in the date to the curl close to star 13. Struck very slightly off center to K-10.5. This cent was plated in Wayte Raymond's Standard Catalog, the forerunner to the "Redbook" we enjoy today. Henry C. Hines called this example the "finest 1825 cent," and he certainly got to see a lot of really nice ones. Ted's envelope includes a notation from him stating this piece is "The Premier 1825." Called MS65 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20618. Bland says MS65 and CC#1 as well. Our grade is MS65+, close to MS66. PCGS Population 1; none finer.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.
