Lot 1567

1861. NGC graded AU-58. Popular no motto type. When War was declared between the forces of the North and South in early 1861, depositors scurried to the Philadelphia Mint to have their bullion turned into serviceable coins. It is likely for this reason that mintage exploded to 688,000+ pieces for the 1861 $5 gold which far outdistances other dates both before or after. In fact, this mintage would not be surpassed again until 1880 at Philadelphia! (PCGS # 8288) .
Estimated Value $500 - 550.

Realized $863
