Lot 1520

1860-D. NGC graded AU-55. Mostly untoned. Softly struck as usually seen on the UN of UNITED, with peripheral dentils soft on the lower left obverse. However, the central device of Liberty's head is rather sharp, with bold definition on her hair curls. The reverse is attractive for this issue, which is known for some of the poorest quality planchets used by the Dahlonega Mint. In the past, before certification, the tiny mintage of only 1,566 struck allowed for claims of this date and mint being a great rarity with fewer than 20 known. This is has been clearly shown to be an exaggeration, and while this date is not as rare as the 1861-D, it certainly deserves attention with perhaps 100 pieces known today. Here is a collectible high grade example which shows finer high grade detail than often seen. Pop 17; 33 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7556) Value $8,500 - 9,000
