1793 Letter to Moses Brown, Co-Founder of Brown University, Abolitionist and Industrialist. Printed circular letter from London merchant John Matthew Bulkely announcing that he is going into business for himself and promising "assiduity in the dispatch of Your Ships and the strictest honor and punctuality in all my dealings with You…." St. Petersurg, Aug. 30, 1793. With an ALS ("J M Bulkely") on verso regarding a shipment. Addressed to Mr Moses Brown, Newbury port. Brown (1738-1836), who converted to Quakerism, was a co-founder of Brown University, a fervent abolitionist, and an industrialist, who funded the design and construction of some of the first factory houses for spinning machines during the American industrial revolution.
