Lot 1472

1854 $3 Gold. PCGS graded AU-55 CAC Approved. Well struck first year issue, the denomination in smaller letters than 1855-89 on this interesting Type date. Mintage started strong in 1854, but declined noticeably in 1856-57, reaching a nadir in 1858 when only a couple of thousand pieces were coined. From then on $3 coinage bounced along at relatively low levels as the odd-cousin denomination tried to gain a foothold. The design is by James B. Longacre who created many mid-19th century coin designs for US coinage such as the Flying Eagle and Indian Cents, Three-cent Silver, Three-cent Nickel, Shield Nickel, Gold Dollar, Liberty Double Eagle, and numerous fascinating and wonderful pattern coins during his day (1844 to 1869). Longacre died in office in 1869, and was replaced as chief engraver by William Barber (PCGS # 7969) .
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,100.

Realized $1,265
