Lot 1455

1916. NGC graded MS-65. A frosty white coin. A popular key date that is seldom found in Gem condition. Only 52,000 struck and this is one of the finer examples known today. The surfaces are satiny and all but free of any sign of handling, with a decent strike on Liberty's head and the shield. Remarkably, these were struck right at the tail end of 1916, and were not released separately but along with the 1917 quarters once they were struck. Hence few were saved as these just appeared to be part of the general new issue. It wsn't until sometime later that the rarity of the 1916 Standing Liberty quarters became known, but by then most had been in circulation for some time. Pop 24; 7 finer, 1 in 65+, 3 in 66, 1 in 66 Star, 2 in 67.
Estimated Value $18,000 - 19,000.
