Lot 1304

Pin. Rare Stick Pin [Tiffany?]. This lovely Greek gold piece is comprised of yellow gold pin perhaps in 9 or 10 Kt. attached to an ancient gold coin from Syracuse, Sicily -- a gold Double Dekadrachm of King Agathokles, 317-289 BC., struck around 295 BC. The obverse depicts a fine classical head of Athena in profile wearing a crested Corinthian helmet decorated with a running griffin. The reverse shows a winged thunderbolt with the king's name on either side. Accompanied by an old, slightly tattered, Tiffany's box in which it has long resided although no assay marks from the firm have been noted on the piece. However, the New York shop is known to have been offering ancient engraved gems and ancient coin jewelry in the first decade of the 20th century. Coin diameter: 15 mm. Pin length: 73 mm. (2-7/8"). The coin (approximately 22 to 23 Kt) is finely preserved and of the artistic quality that made Magna Graecia, i.e. southern Italy, justly famous in antiquity for its exquisite metal craft. In this condition the coin alone would have a current market value of over $2000, without the jewelry addition. As an object of fashion, however, soldered to the stick pin, the astute buyer can acquire a stunning antiquity for much less. Don"t miss your chance on this one!
Estimated Value $800 - 1,000.
