Lot 1214

1896-O. PCGS graded MS-63. Frosty and toned on both sides. To the inexperienced eye, the 1896-O Morgan Dollar would come across as a common, everyday O-Mint date in this long-produced and widely collected series. The New Orleans Mint struck just shy of 5 million dollars this year. Characteristic of the decade excepting only the 1898-O and 1899-O, the striking quality is, to put it charitably, well below average compared to, say, the 1880s decade O-mint dates. Since many coins made their way into circulation, this date is obtainable in worn condition. Even low grade Uncirculated examples can be purchased for a modest sum. In grades above the average BU level, on the other hand, the '96-O is one of the condition rarities in this series. This desirable example is a choice lustrous one with natural patina acquired over many year, with some of the luster still bright and hard-working as it glow beneath. Some weakness of strike is seen at the above the ear and at the eagle’s breast feathers. All other areas indicate the proper sharpness from metal flowing deep into the die recesses. Pop 277; 37 finer, 6 in 63+, 28 in 64, 1 in 65, 2 in 66 (PCGS # 7242) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Realized $5,875
