Lot 1190

1861-D. NGC graded AU-58. Well struck for this issue with minimal soft areas on the devices. This is the final year of operation of the Dahlonega Mint, being located in the deep South of this country in the state of Georgia. When the Civil War began in early 1861, this Mint would soon find itself taken over by the Confederates, which occurred on April 8, 1861. The Confederates needed all the hard currency (gold and silver) they could find, so all remaining planchets were probably struck, possibly 1,000 to 2,000 more gold pieces added to the official mintage. The surfaces remain bright and untoned. Only 1,597 pieces were struck under the United States, plus others under the Confederacy. Today only about 75 of these are known in all grades, this one clearly finer than the majority. Quite important for the specialist and this is clearly one of the most desierable issues of the period, with a roughly equal chance of being struck by the United States or the Confederates, although these is no way to differentiate these coins struck from the same dies. Pop 11; 4 finer, 1 in 61, 2 in 62, 1 in 64. (PCGS # 8290) Estimate Value $38,000 - 40,000

Realized $58,750
