Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 100

Lot 1188

1860-D. Large D. PCGS graded AU-55. Untoned with some mint luster evident. The Large D variety is far rarer than the Medium D issue of this tough date. PCGS has only graded a handful of examples in all grades. This one is certainly one of the finer examples, and offers rich yellow gold color, a sharp strike and clean surfaces. There are no deep cuts or nicks to mar the eye appeal. Destined for an advanced collection of Dahlonega gold coins.

As the Civil loomed ever closer, the Dahlonega Mint received little gold to strike, so mintages declined year over year with the economic and war pressures building. Of the coins that were struck, most simply disappeared, lost to the trials and tribulations of that troubled time. Here is one that was set aside and saved, thankfully for the lucky collectors of today, who can long enjoy its beauty and charm. Only 14,635 struck. Pop 3; 2 finer in 58. (PCGS # 98286) Estimate Value $4,000 - 4,500

Realized $6,756
