Lot 1175

WWI: Remarkable Collection of 1000+ Photographs and 21 Glass Plate Negatives: Fighter Planes, Airships, Troops, Aerial Photos and More. From a member of the 7th Corps Artillery Liaison School, 88 Aero Squadron, 3rd Photo Squadron, Earl S. Messer. When Googling, Mr. Messer's name show up in War Department Files, official A.E.F. Photograph files and science records shooting the earliest images of Haley's Comet. From his estate, a phenomenal collection of well over 1000 photos from his time in Europe during WWI. The collection includes single weight, silver nitrate photos as small as 1 x 3" to 7 x 9½" photographs and includes 15 7 x 9" glass plate negatives and six, 4 x 5" glass plate negatives. The most astonishing history can be found in this collection: Battle scenes, destruction, fighter biplanes, wounded, aerial reconnaissance images of (enemy) terrain, small picturesque towns, military bases, countless images of WWI fighting men airships and much more. As these are single weight photos, most curl, something very easily remedied by having in folios. There is much history here and images that amaze in their scale and beauty. Fortunately the collection was wonderfully archived these 100+ years and kept from moisture and insects. A treasure trove from the first World War and unlike anything Goldberg Auctions has ever offered. Previewing in person highly recommended. Estimated Value $600 - UP
From The Celebrated Collection of Alden T. Barnes.
