Post Civil War: Major General George Gordon Meade, Army of the Potomac, Defeated Robert E. Lee at Battle of Gettysburg, ALS dated 10/11/67 (1815-1872) General George G. Meade was a career United States Army officer and civil engineer best known for decisively defeating Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War. His years of service spanned 1842-1872 and was involved in the Second Seminole War. Autographed letter signed written in 1867, after the Civil War where Meade was made Commissioner of Fairmount Park in Philadelphia from 1866 to his death. Letter is addressed to "Cal offering "to be of service to you & your family" and continues extending "my high personal regards" and closing with "ready & willing to see you…. My best wishes George G. Meade". Folds but in excellent condition with only slight evidence of handling.
Also included is a National Guard of Pennsylvania memorandum dated December 30, 1880 to a Captain Denithone chastising him that two men under his command have failed to comply with an order and that they have ten days to comply or they will be reported. Estimated Value $400 - UP
