Lot 114

1847 N-18 R5 Repunched Date PCGS graded AU53. The so-called Large 7 over Medium 7 variety. Very attractive medium brown and light chocolate blending to medium olive in protected areas on the reverse. Lightly worn on the devices showing only a few trivial marks. The notable marks are a light diagonal nick right of the nostril and a very tiny pinprick midway between stars 3 & 4. E-MDS, die state a. The obverse rim is unbroken and the "moonscape" texture of the portrait is visible (a hub defect always seen on higher-grade examples of the variety). Repunching is clearly visible on all 4 digits of the date and the "Large 7 over Medium 7" feature is obvious. Our grade is VF35+, close to EF40. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 7 finer: 3 in 58, 2 in 62, 1 in 63, 1 in 64. Estimated Value $300 - UP
