Rare Luristan Whetstone with Bronze Mountain Goat Head Handle, Northwestern Iran, 1000 B.C. Luristan mountain goat head handle with a length of original whetstone included. Luristan work had the tendency to elongate the necks and bodies of animals which allowed for exceptionally graceful details and curves. That design flourish is clearly evident in this mountain goat that is actually the handle of a whetstone used to sharpen blades. The horns were originally two concentric round horns and indeed note the extension of the neck and body. This was attached to about a 5-6 inch length of whetstone of which 3" is present centuries broken off within the handle. You can see a drill hole at tip of the stone likely for hanging. There is a pristine example in the permanent collection at the Detroit Institute of Art which can be Googled. Goat is 2¼ x 3". Estimated Value $800 - 1,200
