Carranza, Venustiana (1859-1920) One of the leaders of the Mexican Revolution; President of Mexico 1915-1920. The current constitution of Mexico was drafted during his administration. Typed Letter Signed as First Chief of the Constitutional Army, Mexico, April 29, 1916, one page quarto. To General of Division Candido Aguilar, regarding an inquiry made by a woman about her son or husband. Carranza replies that Col. Teodoro Constantino Gilbert has received many complaints of abuse and violations in his command and that he has been retained in Veracruz at the disposition of the Military Command in order to rectify his conduct. Carranza signs as Aguilar's friend and "coreligionist." At upper left on the letterhead is an eagle with a snake in its beak, perched on a banner that says "Republica Mexicana," and below: "Primer Jefe del Ejercito Constitucionalista." Slight bleeding to ink in signature. Matted with a color image of Carranza to an overall size of 16 ½ x 7 ¾ inches.

Five months after he wrote this letter, Carranza called for a constitutional convention. On March 11, 1917, he was elected the first President under the new Mexican constitution of 1917. He was overthrown and assassinated in 1920.
