(Nixon, Richard) Souvenir Briefcase From His China Trip. Souvenir briefcase from President Richard Nixon's historic trip to China in 1972. Leather, 13 x 17 in., engraved with a gold Presidential Seal and "President Nixon's Trip Peoples Republic of China February 1972." A label from the Kandara Palace Hotel is attached; the label has some chipping. From the collection of journalist Bob Considine. During February 21-28, 1972, President Nixon spent an extraordinary week in the People's Republic of China (PRC), where he met with Chairman Mao Tse-tung and Premier Chou En-Lai. Nixon was the first President to visit China and the first to visit a nation with which the United States had no formal diplomatic relations.
