Lot 105

1786 New Jersey Maris 23-R Rarity-2 F15+. Clipped Planchet. Glossy chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning covering the devices. The two-tone appearance accents the designs and enhances the eye appeal. The surfaces are nice but not perfectly smooth as a glass reveals traces of microscopic roughness in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and only a few trivial contact marks, none notable. A minor planchet clip affects the dentils under the 17 in the date and the opposing ones above IB in PLURIBUS. The date is easily readable (although the 6 was weakly impressed into the die, as always) and the legends are strong. Listed on pages 68-9 in the "Redbook." Weight 138.9 grains.
Estimated Value $200-UP.
Ex 2004 C-4 Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 11/13/2004:308 (lot ticket included).
