Guiteau, Charles J (1841-1882) Convicted and hanged for the assasination of James A. Garfield. Guiteau a failure most his life ried living in a religous sect, a poor attorney, a forger, a fraud and likely a petty thief. He tried repeatedly for employment with Garfield's administration and rejected numerous times until told never to return. Clearly that set up in his mind an act of revenge with an onset of increasingly unstable behavior. On July 2, 1881, after months of stalking, Guiteau shot Garfield at a train station in Washington DC. Garfield famously died 11 weeks later due to the gross incompetence of his medical care. At that point Guiteau was charged with murder followed by a trial that became a media circus due to Guiteau's clownish courtroom behavior. He was hanged for his crime on June 30, 1882. Offered is a scarce cut signature. 3 x 1¼". A bold signature with some foxing. Estimated Value $300 - 400

Realized $180
