Lot 1005

1795 Centered Bust. B-15; BB-52. PCGS graded AU-58. Boldly struck throughout with incredible detail on Liberty's hair curls and just a hint of wear on the high points. The reverse is a close match with most of the eagle's breast feathers present Some fine adjustment marks noted on the reverse as made and the surfaces are essentially as struck. Delicate mottled iridescent toning on both sides.

This was one of two die pairings produced to update the unpopular Flowing Hair design launched in 1794. Here we see Liberty's hair gently tied back with a ribbon, and her long curls cascading down beyond her shoulders. The first of the two dies has Liberty's head punch placed too high and to the left rather than being centered on the obverse die, as seen here. These were issued in limited numbers at the tail end of 1795. For the reverse the new design has a smaller eagle with outstretched wings standing on the clouds, encircled by a wreath of laurel and palm fronds. This is one of the finest seen of the "Centered Head" variety and a coin not to be missed by any serious specialist. Pop 1 in 58, 1 in 58+, 2 in 61, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 39995) Estimated Value $25,000 - UP
