Adams, Samuel -- Document Signed by the Massachusetts Signer (1722-1803). Signer of the Declaration of Independence and Governor of Massachusetts. Manuscript document signed "Saml Adams" as witness to a legal document, one page, on laid watermarked paper, 12¼ x 7¾", Mar. 29, 1784. "Thomas McNeil of New Boston in the County of Hillsborough and Jona. Cass of Exeter in the County of Rockingham Merchant, both of New hampshire" bind themselves to John Taylor Gilman, Treasurer of New Hampshire in the amount of twenty-five pounds; however, McNeil has an order on the Paymaster of the New Hampshire Line signed by Levi Hoyt for wages due him for 1781, dated June 12, 1783, and "if it shall hereafter appear that the said order was forg'd or unfairly obtain'd then the above obligation …to be null and void." McNeill and Jonathan Cass sign at lower right, with paper seals. Adams and Joseph Gilman sign as witnesses at left. Fine condition. Adams was president of the Massachusetts Senate when he witnessed this document. Jonathan Cass was the father of future statesman and 1848 Democratic presidential nominee, Lewis Cass.
