Ruggles, Samuel - One of First Missionaries to Hawaii (1795-1871) A missionary with the first company to the Sandwich Islands; he established two missions there, including one at Waimea, Kauai and one at Hilo, Hawaii. Autograph letter from Langdon I. Ward, Treasurer of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, 8 x 5¼ in., Boston, 1867, Oct. 23, 2 pp. To Rev. A.L. Loomis regarding a monetary grant to Samuel Ruggles in recognition of missionary service in the Sandwich Islands from 1820 to 1834. An extremely rare letter regarding one of most important Hawaiian missionaries and his relationship with the organization which sent him to Hawaii. Rev. A.L. Loomis was apparently a descendent of Elisha Loomis (1799-1836), a missionary in the first company to Hawaii and responsible for the first printing in the Hawaiian language.
Estimated Value $600 - 800.
