Lot 98

1828 N-8 R3 Large Date PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Glossy medium brown and tan mixed with darker olive brown and steel on the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. Looks mint state but there is a touch of rub on the highest points and a few trivial marks, including a spot of darker toning at the right top of the E in ONE. Sharply struck EDS, before the die crack through UNITED. Struck with a double profile on parts of stars 5-8 and a very fine triple profile on the brow (from die bounce). Noyes graded AU50 and CC#2, his photo #28441. Our grade is AU55. A nice example of a variety that is surprisingly difficult to find in top grades. The attribution and Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; tied for finest BN of the variety at both services. PCGS #36895. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
Ex Tom Reynolds 3/11/1987-March Wells, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/7/2000:1902-Manuel Ahumada Collection (includes the Wells lot ticket).
