Lot 953

1909-S. VDB. NGC graded VF-20 BN. Nice even wear. An attractive specimen, the storied first design with V.D.B. along the lower reverse rim. This placement caused some negative responses. Later dies were made without the letters. Only in 1918 was a small "B" for Victor D. Brenner, the coin's designer, surrepticiously added at the left end of the truncation of Lincoln's shoulder.

It is comforting to know that Brenner (1871-1924) was still alive to see his good name (or at least, initial) restored to his artistic creation. Brenner is best known for this enduring Lincoln coin design, the obverse of which is the longest-running design in United States Mint history. Brenner's model of the 16th President had been picked by 26th U.S. President, Theodore Roosevelt, who had earlier posed for him in New York (PCGS # 2428) .
Estimated Value $500 - 550.

Realized $705
