Roosevelt, Theodore -- Typed Letter Signed as Vice President (1858-1919) 26th President of the United States (1901-1909). Typed letter signed "Theodore Roosevelt" as Vice President, one page, on "The Vice President's Chamber" letterhead, Washington, April 3, 1901. Five and a half months before he would be thrust into the presidency by William McKinley's assassination, Roosevelt responds to Dr. H.L.K. Shaw, the son of the late Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, regarding how an anonymous $500 donation by a lady was spent to help needy veterans, some of them "colored." Roosevelt writes, in part: "…I meant the sum to be at the absolute discretion of your lamented father whose judgment I knew I could implicitly trust…for I felt that in more than one way he rendered very great service to the country." Typewritten text is light but Roosevelt's signature is bold. Matted with a small, bust engraving of Roosevelt and framed to an overall size of 20½ x 11¾". A carbon copy of Dr. Shaw's letter regarding the donation is present. Estimate $400 - 600

Realized $325
