Lot 89

1846 N-17 R4+ Small Date PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous medium steel brown with a few faint peeps of faded mint red showing. Looks choice mint state but there is a hint of friction on the very highest points of the devices. The only marks are a hairline scratch right of star 7 and a small spot of reddish brown toning above the left side of the N in ONE. EDS, die state a, with an uncracked reverse and all the fine die lines clear. The "moonscape" texture always seen on the portrait is obvious. A very nice example of this tough die variety. Our grade is AU58+, very close to MS60, and tied for CC#7 in the Grellman census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; none finer. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
Ex Ron Cooper 2/25/1970-Jules Reiver, Heritage Auctions 1/24/2006:20253 ($990)-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection (includes the Reiver collection envelope and lot ticket).

Realized $1,560
